Pihu stepped between the furious couple on the bike and the trembling boy near the car, her voice firm,
"Excuse me, stop! Why are you behaving like this?" Her eyebrows furrowed in an attempt to maintain composure.
The boy in the car, eyes wide with shock, watched the confrontation unfold.
"Who are you? Stay out of this! Can't you see what he did? Because of him, we fell! He has to compensate!" the boy on the bike spat, his voice laced with anger.
"Okay, but why are you shouting at him? He's just a kid, and he wasn't even driving," Pihu reasoned calmly.
"No, we want 50,000 cash right now, or we're calling the police," the girl on the bike demanded, her tone equally abrasive.
"M-mam, I'll pay, but I-I don't have that much cash right now. Please understand. My b-brother has gone to get something. Please let him come," the boy in the car stammered, his voice trembling, betraying his panic.
"Listen, I want cash right now, or I'll file a complaint against you for underage rash driving," the girl threatened, her attitude unwavering.
Pihu's patience was wearing thin. The situation was escalating, and she was determined to find a solution.
"Hello, miss, it's okay. You don't have to do anything. Actually, my cafe is right there, I have CCTV cameras. Let me call the police. I'll show them the footage. Let them handle this matter." Pihu said, pointing towards her cafe.
Pihu reached for her phone. The boy on the car looked visibly panicked, but before he could express, the couple on the bike hastily reversed their stance.
"It's okay!! it's okay, sis. We're getting late. And you boy, don't do this again. We're good people, that's why we're leaving you," the boy on the bike said, his forced smile masking his underlying fear. They quickly mounted the bike and sped away.
The crowd began to disperse, leaving the boy in the car standing alone, still processing the events. Pihu turned towards him, a gentle smile gracing her lips.
"Hey, are you alright?" she inquired.
The boy, seemingly lost in thought, was captivated by her smile. He blinked, snapping out of his daze.
"Y-yeah, mam. Thank you for helping m-me," he stammered, a hesitant smile touching his lips.
"Hey, you don't have to thank me. And don't call me mam. You're younger than me. You can call me Didi, Di, or by my name, but not mam. By the way, I'm Pihu," she introduced herself, extending her hand for a handshake.
The boy's eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion, but he quickly masked it. He took her hand, his grip surprisingly firm yet hesitant.
"Hi, I'm Ayaan," he replied.
As their hands met, Pihu felt a jolt – Ayaan's hand was burning hot, and he was trembling. Her smile faltered, replaced by concern.
"Hey, you're burning up! Come sit down," she urged, ayaan was about to sit in his car...
"Wait, no, not here. Come with me. My cafe is open. You can wait inside, where it's safer. I know you don't know me, but believe me, I won't harm you. Just relax for a while. Think of me as your big sister. Won't you listen to your big sister?" she insisted, a hint of feigned uncertainty masking her genuine worry.
Ayaan's eyes welled up. No one had ever shown this much concern for him except his family, not even his relatives, since his mother passed away. He simply nodded, his resistance melting away.
Seeing his acquiescence, Pihu led him to her cafe, which was bustling with customers. Ayaan tried to decline, not wanting to overburden her, but she gently shushed him and led him to her private cabin, inviting him to sit on the sofa.
"You relax here. I'll get you something to eat and some medicine," she said, leaving him no room for argument.
Ayaan looked around the cozy cabin, lost in thought. How could she be so kind to a complete stranger? He felt a strange sense of connection with her, a feeling of trust he rarely experienced with anyone outside his immediate family.
He was deep in contemplation when Pihu returned, a tray laden with soup, a sandwich, and medicine. She placed it before him with a warm smile.
He reached for the medicine, but Pihu gently intercepted him.
"What are you doing? Eat first. It's not healthy to eat medicine on an empty stomach," she scolded playfully, her hand resting lightly on her waist.
Ayaan couldn't help but smile at her playful demeanor.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude," she apologized, not wanting to upset her.
"No, no, Di. You don't have to apologize. I should be thanking you for helping me," he corrected himself, realizing his slip-up. He quickly tried to amend his words, but...
Pihu glanced at him with a reassuring smile.
"Ayaan, it's fine. No need to feel uncomfortable." she says and paused for a moment, her gaze softening.
"Okay, now tell me... in which class are you? And what are you doing here at this time? I’m sorry if that’s too personal, it’s okay if you don’t want to share." she asks taking a seat in front of him on chair
Ayaan hesitated for a second, but then, not wanting to make her feel bad, he quickly responded.
"Di, I’m in 11th... and, no, it’s fine. You don’t have to apologize."
Pihu nodded, sensing his discomfort.
"What were you doing here, though? Isn’t it school time for you?" she asked, curiosity lacing her tone.
Ayaan looked down, fidgeting slightly.
"V…vo, I wasn’t feeling well, so I called my brother to pick me up," he mumbled, avoiding her gaze.
Pihu’s intuition told her something wasn’t quite right, but she chose not to press him further. She shrugged off the feeling and nodded, accepting his explanation.
"Where’s your brother, though? How could he leave you like this?" she asked, her tone shifting to one of concern.
Ayaan flinched a little, his cheeks reddening.
"N..no, di. He wasn’t leaving me. The medical shop here was closed, so he went to another one. I insisted him to go," he quickly defended, not wanting to make his brother look bad.
Pihu’s expression softened as she processed his words. She nodded understandingly, but before she could respond, her phone rang.
"Excuse me, Ayaan," she said, stepping away to answer the call.
Ayaan, was left alone at the table, reached for the sandwich in front of him. It was one of his favorites, though he would never have said so aloud. His shy nature kept him from speaking up. As he took a bite, a thought crossed his mind—If Mom was here, she would have made sure I got this kind of food every day. He shook the thought away quickly, focusing on the present.
He glanced out the window and saw his brother walking towards their car. The weight of the situation hit him again, and he realized he should thank Pihu before leaving. But she was busy on her call, and he didn’t want to disturb her.
His fingers brushed against the pen and paper on the table. Without thinking much, he scribbled a quick note and tucked it under the paperweight. He took one last look at the café, grateful for Pihu’s kindness, and then hurried out towards the car.
Outside, Yuvaan was huffing as he got into the car.
"Ayaan, sorry for being late! Let’s go," he said, starting the engine with a slight groan.
Ayaan, feeling a strange mix of emotions, but climbed into the car without saying a word. As they drove toward their villa, his mind wandered back to Pihu. Her kindness, the way she’d taken care of him without hesitation... It felt warm, yet unfamiliar. He found himself thinking about her often, about how sweet and understanding she was. But then doubt crept in.
Would she be angry with me for not telling her I was leaving? he wondered, chewing on his lower lip. But she’s so sweet... what if she does get mad?
The uncertainty lingered in his mind, and for the rest of the ride, his thoughts stayed with Pihu.
